Volunteer / intern at SI MA BÔ

 

Hello!
My name is Christina I am 23 years old and I come from Germany.
From 03/08/2014 to 06/02/2014 I volunteered as an intern at SI MA BÔ ("Just like you") in Mindelo. Since I have just completed my bachelor's degree and I am waiting for the results, I want to use my time wisely. I happened to make ​​contact with Silvia, the director of SI MA BÔ. By the way, I live in "La Terrazza" (yes, it is what it is!)

One of my tasks was to help Silvia in the office to create lists of travel agencies and animal welfare organizations and to get in contact with them later on; since the project aims to be financed through tourism (just donations are not enough to help the animals).
If I ever need a break, I just take the dogs for a walk by the sea (you can see the sea from the balcony of the office, as well as from our terrace).
In addition, I help to translate texts or even compose texts for the SI MA BÔ websites (like this one).
My friend Julia helps with the cats (she is an absolute cat fan, I tend to prefer dogs, she cleans the rooms of cats and feeds them.)
But the work continues to pile up , so they are in constant need of more helping hands, whether in the office, the “Dog-House” or “Cat-House”. New people are always needed to walk the dogs, bathe them, feed them, care for the cats and I'm not just talking about veterinarians, animal caretakers or nurses and ordinary animal lovers who could give some attention and care to the animals. Apart from donations in the form of money or delivery of medicines, here a lot of time and attention is needed.
And why not? You get to work and learn, help out – whilst satisfying your general well being, and on top of it you get to experience it in a holiday-like climate and environment! In Mindelo you can enjoy the sun and the sea to the fullest, walking, water sports and you can get to know a new culture. This experience extends beyond just a "normal" holiday. You get involved in the real live of Mindelo by the staff and colleagues immediately even though you may have some awkwardness - as a tourist you get noticed more often. From time to time you get invited to a cup of tea by your colleagues or even invited to join them for a party. Everybody is in.

What makes me most happy is that I have pets here that I was never allowed to have in Germany: large and small dogs of all kinds, playful and cuddly, cats and kittens that warm your back at work (whilst you sit in front of a notebook) or sometimes just sit on your lap - how much better can the work environment become if you  have a little fluffy, calming and relaxing being around you, it is said that cats have a smoothing effect on people – and it's true.

Volontär/ Praktikant bei SiMaBo

 

Hallo! 

Mein Name ist Christina, 23 Jahre alt und ich komme aus Deutschland.

Im Zeitraum vom 8.3.2014 bis 2.6.2014 bin ich ein Volontär/ Praktikant bei SiMaBo („So wie du“) auf Mindelo. Da ich meinen Bachelor gerade abgeschlossen habe und nun auf die Ergebnisse warte, wollte ich meine Zeit sinnvoll nutzen. So kam es dazu, dass ich Kontakt zu Silvia, der Leiterin von SiMaBo, aufnahm. Übrigens wohne ich in „La Terrazza“ (der Name hält was er verspricht).

  

 

Zu meinen Aufgaben gehört es, Silvia im Büro zu helfen, Listen von Reiseagenturen und Tierschutzvereinen zu erstellen, um später mit ihnen Kontakt aufzunehmen, da das Projekt durch den Tourismus finanziert werden soll (alleine auf Spenden kann man sich dann doch nicht verlassen, wenn man den Tieren mehr bieten möchte).

Wenn ich mal eine Pause brauche, nehme ich einfach die Hunde mit und gehe am Meer spazieren (das Meer kann man übrigens vom Balkon des Büros sehen, wie auch von unserer Terrasse).

Weiterhin helfe ich beim übersetzten von Texten oder verfasse selbst texte (sowie diesen hier).

Meine Freundin, Julia, hilft mit den Katzen (sie ist ein absoluter Katzenfan, ich neige mehr zu Hunden, sie putzt die Zimmer der Katzen und füttert sie.

Doch es ist immer Not am Mann, denn es werden mehr helfende Hände gebraucht, ob im Büro, dem Hundeheim oder Katzenheim. Es werden immer Leute gebraucht, die die Hunde ausführen, baden, füttern, die Katzen pflegen und ich rede nicht nur von Tierärzten, Tierpflegern oder Schwestern, sondern von ganz normalen Tierliebhaben, die den Tieren etwas Aufmerksamkeit und Fürsorge schenken. Abgesehen von Spenden in Geld Form oder als Versand von Medikamenten ist hier viel Zeit und Liebe notwendig.

Und wieso auch nicht? Ich arbeite - lerne also dazu -, helfe aus – befriedige meine wohltätige Ader – und oben drauf habe ich sogar Urlaubsgefühle! Auf Mindelo kann man die Sonne und das Meer in vollen Zügen genießen, wandern, Wassersport machen und einfachmal eine neue Kultur kennenlernen, welches über einen „normalen“ Urlaub hinausreicht. Man wird von den Mitarbeitern und Kollegen sofort miteinbezogen und fühlt sich „kaum“ fremd (wir sind immer noch weiß, fallen also ein wenig auf). Mal bekommt man einen Tee spendiert, mal zum Feiern eingeladen. Unglaublich offen und herzlich.

Was mich persönlich noch einmal mehr erfüllt ist, dass ich hier Haustiere habe, die ich in Deutschland niemals haben durfte: große und kleine Hunde aller Art, verspielt, verschmust; Katzen und Kätzchen, die einem bei der Arbeit am Laptop den Rücken wärmen oder sich mal auf den Schoß setzten – wie viel besser kann doch ein Arbeitsklima werden, wenn einen etwas flauschiges beruhigt und entspannt – nicht umsonst sollen Katzen eine heilsame Wirkung auf Menschen besitzen.

Reisen nach Kap Verde

Cabo Verde (oder Kap Verden) – Sonniges Insel-Paradies vor der Westküste Afrikas!

 

Die Kap Verden sind eine vulkanische, klimatisch der Sahel-Zone entsprechende Inselgruppe westlich von Senegal im Atlantik gelegen (25° – 30°C das ganze Jahr durchgehend). 

 

Die Planung unserer Reise nach Mindelo, dem Hauptort der Insel Sao Vicente, begann wie üblich – mit der Suche nach einem geeigneten Quartier.

Soviel vorweg: Rollstuhl-geeignete Wohnungen sind Mangelware in Mindelo. Hotels ebenfalls.

 

Die uns privat vermittelte Adresse einer in Mindelo lebenden sehr engagierten Dame* erwies sich als doppelter Glücksfall – vorallem: Wir konnten auf Deutsch kommunizieren (Amtssprache ist Portugiesisch, Umgangssprache Kiriolu)!

 

Eine private, zentral gelegene, grosszügige (einfache) Mehrzimmer-Wohnung war bis auf den Eingang voll rollstuhlgängig. So erlebten wir die ersten Eindrücke vom Leben der Stadt nach unserem Gusto. Leider erwies sich das Bad in der Praxis für uns nur als bedingt kompatibel, weshalb wir nach 5 Tagen doch ins vollständig  rollstuhlgängige, dazu nicht weit entfernte Hotel 'Don Paco', wechselten. So konnten wir doppelte Erfahrungen sammeln.

Die mittelgrosse Stadt Mindelo (ca. 63˙000 EW) fasziniert durch seine einmalige Lage in einer weiten Bucht (einer

ehemalige Caldeira) umgeben von einer Silhouette malerischer Lava-Gestein-Gebirgszüge, einem grossen  Yacht-Hafen und Fährschiffen, die zwischen einigen der insgesamt 8 Inseln verkehren, sowie angrenzend daran einem kleinen malerischen Fischer-Hafen.

 

Die Spaziergänge der Hafenpromenade entlang, über den Markt, dem alten Fischerhafen und zum etwas weiter in derselben Bucht liegenden Badestrand, bieten viele grossartige Eindrücke.

 

Die teilweise sehr arme Bevölkerung, grossmehrheitlich afrikanisch-stämmig verschiedenster Herkunft  – die Kap Verden waren in früheren Jahrhunderten Umschlagplatz des weltweiten Sklavenhandels – trifft sich auf dem bunten, weitläufigen Fisch -, Früchte- und allgemeinen Markt, auf dem das typisch afrikanische Leben pulsiert! 

 

Verpflegungsmöglichkeiten durch private 'fliegende' Verkäuferinnen, eine Strandbar mit Restaurant und die zahlreichen mittleren und kleineren Restaurants (oft mit einfacher Küche/Speisekarte) bieten ein buntes einheimisches, schmackhaftes Angebot: Mehrheitlich Fisch und Meeresfrüchte plus Reis und Pommes-Frites aber ebenso Fleischspeisen, sowie die traditionelle 'Catchoupa', ein einfaches Eintopfgericht mit Bohnen und Kartoffeln mit Fleisch und/oder Fisch – aber auch leckere Langusten stehen auf dem Speisezettel.

Travel to Cape Verde

Cabo Verde (or Cape Verde) – A sunny Island-Paradise in front of the west coast of Africa!

The Cape Verde is a volcanic Island group, climatic similar to the Sahel-zone Island group, in the west of Senegal in the Atlantic Ocean (25°-30°C all year).

The planning for our trip to Mindelo, the capital of Sao Vicente, started out as usual – with the search for a suitable accommodation.

But before that: Wheelchair suitable living quarters are scarce in Mindelo, as well as hotels.

The private address of a very dedicated lady*, who is living in Mindelo, was proved to be a double stroke of luck – the best thing: we could communicate in German (the official language on the Cape Verde is Portuguese, the common language is Creole)!

*She is the manager of the local organization SI MA BO, which was established for the protection and care for the local animal population and the environment in Mindelo

A private, central, generous but simple apartment was fully wheelchair accessible (except of the entrance). That way we experienced the live of the city to our liking.

 

Unfortunately the bathroom turned out to not be compatible with our needs, so after only 5 days we still had to switch to a fully wheelchair-accessible, but not too far away hotel “Don Paco”. This way we had the opportunity to gain double the experience.

The medium-sized city Mindelo (approximately 63 000 citizen) captivates with its unique location in a broad bay (a former Caldeira) surrounded by a silhouette of picturesque Lava rock mountain ranges, a big Yacht Harbor and ferries, which run between some of the 8 islands, and also with a neighboring small quaint fisher-port.

The walks along the harbor side, past the market, the old fisher-port and forth to the bathing beach, which is lying a little further in the same bay, offer many great impressions.

 

The partly very poor population, mostly African descendants with different origins – in the earlier centuries the Cape Verde was a hub of the global slave trade – meets at the colorful, extensive fish, fruit- and general market, were the typical African lifestyle lies.

Catering facilities of private “flying” saleswomen, a beach bar with restaurant and the numerous middle-sized and small restaurants (most likely with a simple menu) offer a range of tasty mixed local food: Mainly of fish and seafood with rice and French fries, but also meat dishes, as well as the traditional “Cachupa”, a simple stew with beans, potatoes and meat and or fish – and also a delicious lobster is on the menu.
